03 JUL 2009:  The Air France flight that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on June 1, slammed into the water belly first, French investigators said yesterday. Flight 447 was still intact as it crashed into the Atlantic - defusing speculation that it was blown apart mid-air. However, “Between the surface of the water and 35,000 feet, we don't know what happened. In the absence of the flight recorders, it is extremely difficult to draw conclusions.” Said Alain Bouillard, who leads the investigation on behalf of France's BEA air accident board.

Court reverses acquittals, hikes QM2 fine

3 JUL 2009: A French appeals court reversed acquittals and increased the fines related to the collapse of a Queen Mary 2 gangway at Chantiers de l’Atlantique. Sixteen people died and 30 were injured in the November 2003 incident at St. Nazaire. The Rennes Appeals Court this week reversed the October 2008 acquittal of two Chantiers employees and two employees from subcontractor Endel. The four were sentenced to a suspended prison term of 18 to 24 months.

26 JUN 2009: Peter Deilmann Cruises has confirmed that in 2010 the company will take all eight of its river vessels out of service and leave the river cruise business because of financial difficulties. Deilmann’s US office, based in Alexandria, Virginia, declined any further comment.  A spokesman in the office said employees were "shocked" by Thursday's news out of Germany.

26 JUN 2009: Carnival Corp. chairman Micky Arison said the cruise industry may resort to legal action to address the US$50 Alaska head tax. On board the Seabourn Odyssey, earlier this week Arison suggested that litigation could be the only recourse remaining to cruise operators who have always maintained the tax is unconstitutional.

Company opens a kiosk at Seattle Cruise Terminal

25 JUN 2009: Special Needs at Sea, a global provider of wheelchairs and other special needs equipment, has opened a kiosk at Seattle’s new Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91. Cruise passengers with mobility limitations are referred to the company by cruise lines or travel agents at the time of booking to order equipment in advance.
