NOT YOUR USUAL RIVERBOAT QUEEN |
The ‘Grand Hotel’ of European Riverboats
Ann Wallace
05 FEB 2010: As spring and summer approach, many of your clients may be
thinking of a calm-water cruise on the inland waterways of Europe.
There are many cruise lines to choose from but, let’s be honest, few of
these river ships would win a beauty contest! However… the moment your
clients step aboard the elegant, Premicon Queen they will know this is
going to be a five-star experience.

STILL WITH THE SILVER SPIRIT |
Just too much for one column…
Vanessa Lee
05 FEB 2010: In a recent column I wrote about attending the christening
and inaugural activities of the lovely new Silversea ship the Silver
Spirit. She is now sailing with a full complement of guests on a 91 day
voyage of The Americas and before we know it she will be heading out on
a world cruise in the first months of 2011 – something that a Silversea
ship has not done for a few years now. The 119 day Spirit of Discovery
Voyage departs Los Angeles on January 19th next year.

Three is probably out
|
| Adam Goldstein, Richard Fain, The Oasis |
|
29 JAN 2010: From a product standpoint, Oasis of the Seas is delivering
pretty well as expected. Ratings are “already at a level with the
highest rated ships in the fleet” said Royal Caribbean International
president and CEO Adam Goldstein. Concerns that logistics onboard and
ashore would be problematical have not materialized, “People do not
face crowds or lines.” Said Goldstein. However, after the next
behemoth, Allure of the Seas, joins the fleet later this year, the
cruise line is unlikely to order any further mega-ships.

OH, THE WEATHER OUTSIDE... |
Cruise ships provide vital weather observations
29
JAN 2010: While passengers are sailing blissfully to exotic and
romantic destinations aboard cruise ships, they are unaware that
throughout their vacation the vessels are also helping the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) track global weather
patterns. In 2009, Princess ships made 20,139 weather observations –
more than any other cruise line – earning the company the distinction
of NOAA’s “Weather Cruise Ship Company of the Year.” Coral Princess
led the fleet with 5,142 observations.

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY STRAINED |
Cruise congestion concerns Charleston
29 JAN 2010: Charleston is a lovely and charming city that easily
lives up to its reputation in the numerous books of fact and fiction
that praise its virtues and wink at its southern eccentricities (Check
Pat Conroy’s South of Broad). Consequently the South Carolina Coastal
Conservation League is concerned that as the cruise industry expands
bringing more ships, visitors, congestion and pollution and that the
city’s heralded southern charm could quickly fade away.
